Chapter Twenty-Four
After Pierce had taken my brother home that night, I took the high road and ignored him when he got home, pretending I was asleep. And though his couch was pretty damn comfortable as couches go—especially with his scent clinging to my blanket—I didn’t sleep a wink that night. My mind played out every scenario of turning myself in, of being the good person and doing the right thing. But I was too selfish to do such a thing. I couldn’t let my feelings for him continue to bloom if I was determined to leave.
The next few days, we went about our routines, him being at work almost the entire day and me being bored out of my mind in that tiny apartment. Cooking and painting seemed silly. I could have gone and gotten an actual career or something when I graduated, but now, I couldn’t.
Graduation was that day—four days after Pierce brought my brother over. If I hadn’t screwed up so badly, I would have been there. I would have been graduating with a pretty damn good GPA. But instead, I had gotten caught up in a drug ring, and now I was going to spend yet another night on Pierce’s couch being a loser nobody.
Pierce went to work before I even woke up that morning, as he had every other morning since he took my brother home, but he left coffee and a muffin for me as usual. I nibbled on it while pondering what the hell I would do with myself, coming up very, very short.
He texted me around ten, after I had showered and plopped on the couch with no motivation to do anything at all.
Cop: Can the cold shoulder be over now?
Was his first text.
Cop: I know I’ve been busy the last few days, but I thought you were over being pissed at me about your brother. You’ve basically ignored my presence for three days… so… what’s up, Mia?
Me: Nothing, Pierce.
Cop: Fuck that.
I didn’t deign that worthy of a reply. I ignored it, and he didn’t text anything else. I watched some TV while painting my toenails dark pink. The door slammed open after a few episodes of Jersey Shore, making me jump and paint half my toe pink. Pierce stomped right over to me like a giant, but super sexy, Neanderthal. Yes, I found him to be sexy still, and yes, I missed him touching me and acting like he actually liked having me around. But he hadn’t. He had ignored me just as much as I had ignored his presence.
“Up,” he demanded when I glared up at him.
“You made me mess up a nail,” I snapped, reaching for the polish remover to fix my toe.
He growled, literally growled, before yanking the bottle from my hand and throwing it across the room. “Seriously?” I said in a bored tone, the scent of acetone overwhelming the entire room, burning my nostrils.
“Get up,” he instructed again, and I raised my eyebrows. “Please,” he added.
“What do you want, Pierce?” I drawled, not wanting to have any conversation of any sort.
